World champion horse trainer Christy Wood crosses a river on her horse Dollar.

Big Blend Media House is thrilled to celebrate a massive milestone with one of our resident experts, Christy Wood! We have officially wrapped up Volume 1 of the ABCs of Horses digital podcast magazine—completing the entire alphabet from A to Z!

To celebrate the completion of Volume 1, we sat down with Christy for a fun "getting to know you" session. As we gear up for Volume 2 and Christy prepares to head out on her annual leg of the historic Chief Joseph Trail Ride, we asked her 10 fun questions to dive into the mind of a world champion trainer, horse show judge, author, and legal expert.

Looking Back: The A to Z of Volume 1

Before diving into the questions, we took a quick trip down memory lane. Volume 1 was an incredible masterclass in horsemanship. A few standout moments included:

  • A is for Appaloosa: We kicked off the series exploring the history of the Appaloosa—a hardy breed developed by Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce tribe for its incredible conformation, stamina, and docile disposition.

  • E is for Energy & Emotions: This remains one of our highest-listened episodes, helping owners truly understand and observe their horse's emotional landscape.

  • T is for Trailer Training: A crucial episode highlighting why it's vital to train your horse to load calmly before an emergency or wildfire strike.

  • Z is for Zoomies: We wrapped up the alphabet exploring the quirky, joyful, and sometimes pain-induced behaviors that result in a horse just needing to let loose.

From horse care and hoof maintenance to lunging, reproductive health, and modern diagnostics, Volume 1 (see below) laid a beautiful foundation of stewardship, communication, and safety.

10 Fun Questions with Christy Wood: Highlights from the Podcast Episode

1. What is your spirit animal?

"There’s no doubt it’s going to be the horse. But the dog comes in a very close second. Horses are a beautiful symbol of independence. We really need to thank the horses of our past that helped settle the West, win wars, and save people."

2. What do you do to just take a break and relax?

"Honestly, if I have a spare hour, I just saddle my horse and go trail ride. I love being in the mountains, crossing the water, and being away from the busyness of life. There’s nothing better than sitting on the back of a horse, smelling the dirt, and looking at the horizon."

3. If you could take over anyone's house for a weekend, whose would it be?

"That’s very easy. I would take over Ronald Reagan’s ranch in Santa Barbara. It’s out in the middle of nowhere, there are tons of trails to ride, the stables are right there, and it's a quaint little Spanish home. Very relaxing."

4. If you were gifted a million dollars, how would you use it to make the world better?

"I would split it between cancer research and supporting our veterans. I am currently supporting a wonderful non-profit called Honor Flight, which flies veterans (currently focusing on World War II and Vietnam veterans) to Washington D.C. to see their memorials and receive the honor and respect they deserve. Even if you don't have a million dollars, just being at the airport to cheer them on when they fly back is the best thing you can give them."

5. What is a bucket list item you're actively working on?

"I feel so blessed that I don't really have a bucket list anymore! I've won world championships, I have great people and a great church in my life, and I'm very content. I used to want to go to the Kentucky Derby, but honestly, television coverage does such a fabulous job that I'd rather watch it from the comfort of my living room! I'd just love the financial freedom to anonymously pay for a struggling young couple or elderly couple's dinner."

6. You’re invited to a friend's house for dinner. What do you hope they don't serve?

"Eggplant—I’ve never liked it, it's a texture thing. And absolutely no onions! Onions do not digest well for me and would probably put me in the emergency room."

7. What do you want to be served?

"I enjoy a good, tender ribeye steak. That's really the only cut I prefer."

8. What is your go-to karaoke song?

"I don't really do karaoke, except maybe at Christmas time! There's an old-time Christmas cartoon song with Santa and his reindeer that I like to sing along with. Christmas is my favorite holiday."

9. What do you think aliens really look like?

"If they are out there, I think they'll look similar to us in form, but maybe with larger heads because they might have a bit more intelligence. Honestly, we are so influenced by Steven Spielberg and George Lucas, I usually just leave the creativity to them—or Mel Brooks!"

10. We are building the virtual Big Blend Media House. What do you need in it to feel comfy?

"For me, I want a house with a lot of light, lots of windows, and plenty of indoor plants to bring the outside in.

For my horses in the virtual barn, I want double-sized stalls (24x24 instead of 12x12). They need to be embedded 8 to 10 inches thick in wonderful-smelling cedar shavings. I also don't want the stalls completely enclosed; they need half-doors so they can stick their heads out, see down the aisle, look through windows, and experience nature."
