The Jefferson Highway runs from Winnipeg, Manitoba, all the way to New Orleans, and this month's Jefferson Highway podcast starts at the northern end of the road. Lisa and Roger Bell, president of the Jefferson Highway Association, cross the border with two Manitoba guests who are putting the Pine to Palm Highway back on the map.

Listen to the episode:

Lou Erickson of the Morris & District Centennial Museum tells how a photo of the Jefferson Highway garage, built around 1919 and 1920, sent the museum looking for a story that "nobody knew about." Derek Thille, a Winnipeg car enthusiast and Jefferson Highway Association board member, shares the Manitoba road trip he and his wife took from the border town of Emerson up to Morris.

In this episode

  • How Morris turned one old garage photo into a parade float, a classic car show feature, and signs in five storefront windows on Main Street

  • The first official Jefferson Highway Association sign in Manitoba in a hundred years

  • Old bridges from the original highway you can spot in the fields after harvest

  • Emerson's border history, and the Jefferson Highway's only divided river crossing

  • How early motorists handled snow and cold, from narrow tires to heaters warmed on a wood stove

  • The Morris Stampede, Manitoba's biggest rodeo, and why the prairies are called the bread basket

  • What to see and eat in Winnipeg, from the Exchange District to honey dill sauce

  • Why the Jefferson Highway is a community-built route, and how towns like Morris keep discovering it

The Morris & District Centennial Museum is open in the summer and by appointment in the winter. Admission is free, and the volunteer board welcomes donations.
