Rita Sever is a highly respected expert in human resources, leadership, and supervision, passionately dedicated to social justice. A certified professional coach who works directly with social justice organizations, Rita is the author of two impactful books: Supervision Matters: 100 Bite-Sized Ideas to Transform You and Your Team, and Leading for Justice: Supervision, HR, and Culture. She is also a prominent voice on Big Blend Radio, serving as an expert guest and host of Big Blend Radio's Supervision Matters Podcast and Digital Podcast Magazine.
Supervision, a critical yet often overlooked function of leadership, is what frequently determines a leader's — and an organization's — success or failure. Rita's deep understanding of this principle is profoundly shaped by her own experience. Growing up the youngest of six in a low-income family, she often felt unseen and unheard. This led her to become intensely focused on truly hearing and seeing others, both as individuals and within groups. This personal awareness, combined with her recognition of the world's "uneven playing field," has been central to her unified approach to human resources and organizational development for over twenty years. Her career includes nine years at an AIDS organization and another nine years at a community action agency, directly informing her current consulting practice with social justice organizations throughout the United States.
Holding an MA in Organizational Psychology and a certified professional coaching credential, Rita approaches supervision as a primary leadership function. She also emphasizes human resources and organizational culture as essential components of effectiveness. Rita works with individuals, teams, and entire organizations to help them achieve internal alignment, strengthening their capacity to work towards justice externally. She is proud to work as an affiliate consultant with RoadMap Consulting, a national group of consultants committed to strengthening organizations and advancing social justice. Rita resides in Sonoma County, California, with her husband, Mark.
